United Artists of Detroit Launches Membership- based Initiative
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Detroit gains artist-organized and led membership platform and online directory for arts advocacy
DETROIT, MI — United Artists of Detroit (UAD) is proud to announce the public launch of a membership platform and online artist directory. UAD empowers artists as a self-led network of artists, curators and arts organizations by creating and providing the tools and resources needed to support one another as an artist community. With the generous support of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, United Artists of Detroit has created a website resource for Detroit-based artists which also serves as an online directory offering artists and arts organizations, and arts administrators. This platform provides the opportunity to connect with one another to promote collaboration and makes artists more accessible and visible to businesses seeking to work with creative professionals across all disciplines from Detroit.
United Artists of Detroit first organized in 2018 as a concerned group of artists and arts administrators who wanted to ensure that artists are included in the redevelopment of Detroit. These artists identified a gap that has prevented the growth of the arts within the city which has been confirmed by large organizations and businesses alike: by making Detroit’s creative industries easier for businesses to access, UAD believes it can contribute to growing the economy of the Arts in Detroit.
“Artists have continued to share how much their creative work is being used to broadly promote the revitalization of the city without any true return to them. By focusing on actionable change, UAD seeks to reframe conversation and empower artists, while contributing to strengthening the freelance creative economy with increased visibility,” founding member and President of Heidelberg Project, Jenenne Whitfield.
The mission of United Artists of Detroit is to advocate for a sustainable creative economy and support for the producers of the Arts in Detroit. Long-term goals of United Artists of Detroit is to have every Detroit artist or creative professional signed up as a member of the site, which will remain free throughout 2020. The benefits of membership include an online profile on the Directory, artist to artist support and advocacy, networking events and access to peer-led professional development workshops.
When: United Artists of Detroit will host an Ambassador launch on February 4, 2020 from 6:00pm–8:00pm
Location: Play House, 12657 Moran St, Detroit, MI 48212 (Map)
The grant received in support of the launch of UAD has been generously provided by the Downtown Detroit Partnership, the Detroit fiduciary of the Creative Chamber grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Michigan Film and Digital Media Office (MFDMO). The purpose of the Creative Chamber is to be a talent attraction and retention initiative that bolsters economic development and the creative industries by engaging the local business and creative Community.
